MURRAY JAMES

MORRISON

saxophonist/composer/
music educator

Murray James Morrison is a saxophonist and composer currently living in New York City.

Born and raised in Canada, Murray James came to the United States as a student in 2001, studying at the University of North Texas, Rutgers U., and now New York University. He has studied with Chris Potter, Stefon Harris, George Garzone, Jean-Michel Pilc, Jim McNeely, Conrad Herwig, and Ralph Bowen.

Murray James is one of many young musicians trying to make his mark on the New York jazz scene. His compositions are eclectic, consciously drawing from a palette as diverse as contemporary jazz, world music, bop, and the Western classical tradition. His writing is always challenging, tuneful, and committed to finding new ways of expression in the retrodden musical footprints of our modern world.

Murray James has performed with Joe Lovano, Randy Brecker, Kenny Werner, Wayne Krantz, Eddie Palmieri, Lenny Pickett, Edward Simon, and Frank Sinatra, Jr.; and opened for Chick Corea. He's played the Blue Note a number of times, again in NYC, and has performed throughout the United States, Canada, China, Slovenia, and the United Arab Emirates.

Murray James is presently pursuing doctoral studies and preparing to record an album of his own compositions. The album, entitled "Happy Every Day," will be released December 2009. His earlier recording of "Life Line," with the University of North Texas Two O'Clock Lab Band, garnered a Down Beat Jazz Award in 2006.
