BAD CHINESE, BAD CANADIAN

I'm halfway through my third stay in China and loving every minute of it. Tomorrow I travel to Chongqing. It'll be the seventh big city in China I've seen.

My friend Li Fan is here. He asks me: "Where have you been in China?" I answer him, in chronological order: Beijing, Chengdu, Shanghai, Hangzhou, Shenzhen, Dongguan, Chongqing.

He laughs. Li Fan is a bad Chinese. He's been to fewer provinces in his own country than I have.

I laugh too. I count the number of places I've been in Canada, then I stop laughing. Murray James is a bad Canadian. He's visited more provinces in China than he has in his own country.
